Elizabeth Colomba
Four Seasons
26 June - 3 September 2018
For several months there were paintings on display in the Elms. They were part of Dodie Kazanjian’s new program in Newport called ART&NEWPORT that presents contemporary artist.
The suite of four life-sized portraits of women are by the artist Elizabeth Colomba and the works, curated by Kazanjian, were on loan to The Elms from the artist.
Each portrait symbolized one of the four seasons as an allegory of womanhood. They were on view at The Elms to be in conversation with the other portraits in the room, all part of the Preservation Society’s collection, all of which depict white women of means. Colomba has staged each of her subjects in lavish settings very similar to the room in which you now stand, and they are as serene in their environments as are the ones permanently on view.
